Chess Club (TK-12th)
Are you interested in playing Scholastic Chess at or school? The Valley Oaks Chess Team is one of the best in Kern County…just check out the trophy collection in the bookcases of our elementary meeting area! Chess is a fantastic way to build strategic and creative thinking processes, all while making friends here at school. We will be meeting on the first and third Fridays of each month in Classroom #7 from 12:30-2:00pm. Some direct instruction will be given as well as freeplay with teammates. Scholastic tournaments held at different schools around Kern County will begin in late September and continue once a month through early May. While attendance at these tournaments is not mandatory to be a part of the team, it is highly encouraged because the best learning of the game simply happens by playing the game with a variety of different opponents. If you have any questions, please contact our faculty advisor, Debbie Williams, at (661)852-6700. The first meeting of the year will be Friday, Sept 6th at 12:30pm. We look forward to seeing familiar faces as well as our ‘Newbies!”
Valley Oaks Children’s Choir
The Kids Choir at Valley Oaks is a fun introductory choir, open to all ages, that simply meets once a month to learn the fundamentals and basics of singing while learning simple and well-known songs. Led by Tiffany Edgerle, VOCS parent and local music teacher, the Kids Choir is a fantastic way for students to discover whether or not they love singing and prepare them for transition into Mrs. Napier’s Glee Club. The choir will meet the first Thursday of each month in the warehouse from 2:15-3:00pm. We will prepare for performances at the VOCS Christmas party in December, the Student Showcase in March and Extravaganza in May. For more information, please contact Tiffany Edgerle at (661)472-1619.

The Story Writers’ Club was created to give students in grades TK-8th the opportunity to meet and learn about writing basics with a
focus on creative writing in a cooperative setting. Students receive information each meeting about a story element or topic upon
which the student will focus. The students use different hands on materials, such as story cubes, sticker scenes, story magnets and
various other manipulatives to create their stories. Students will work individually and in groups. There is one scheduled meeting per
month, however, more meetings may be added as schedules permit. Parents/Guardians are required to stay during the meetings and
assist their students when needed. Meeting times and club information are available in the Story Writers’ Club Facebook Group.
